Annual School-Based Flu Vaccination Clinics

The Queen Anne’s County Department of Health is offering free flu vaccinations to eligible students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade (ages 4 to 18) during the school day. Registered nurses from the Department of Health will administer vaccines on site at each school.

Vaccine Options & Information

  • In-School Vaccination (FluMist): Schools will only administer the FluMist nasal spray. It is safe, needle-free, well-tested, and uses a weakened flu virus to build immunity.
  • Health Department Options (Flu Shot): Injectable flu shots (using an inactive flu virus) are recommended for individuals with certain chronic conditions, such as asthma or diabetes. No shots will be given at school. If your child cannot receive FluMist, free flu shots are available directly at the Queen Anne’s County Department of Health.

Digital Registration & Consent Required

Paper consent forms are no longer being used. All registration must be completed online prior to the clinic, and no child will be vaccinated without a completed form on file.

Action Required: Submit Online Consent

Please complete the digital form by September 25th if you want your student to receive the FluMist vaccine at school.

Opting Out: If you do not want your child vaccinated at school, simply do not submit the form.

Important Medical Guidelines

  • Two-Dose Requirement (Under Age 9): Children under 9 years old who have never received a flu vaccine require a second dose approximately 4 weeks after the first. Health Department staff will either administer the second dose at a follow-up school clinic or contact you directly. Second doses may also be received at Health Department walk-in clinics starting October 1st.
  • Recent Vaccines (MMR or Varicella): If your child received an MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) or Varicella (Chickenpox) shot within the 28 days prior to the in-school clinic, their FluMist dose will be deferred until the second clinic visit.

Why Vaccinate?

Children catch and spread the flu at higher rates than adults, often bringing it home to younger siblings or older relatives. Vaccinating school-aged children protects the entire family, keeps kids in the classroom, and saves parents missed work days.
