Introducing the MDH CHART System

The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) is thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of our modernized health licensing system on June 22, 2026. System users will enjoy a more efficient, streamlined, and transparent experience that aligns with modern standards for Maryland State Government services. The Maryland Board of Nursing leads the way as the first participating health occupation board to use the new online licensing system, establishing a framework for future adoption by other boards statewide

Beginning July 15, 2026, as part of the transition to the Maryland Department of Health Centralized Health Accreditation and Registration Tool (MDH CHART), the new licensing system, the Maryland Board of Nursing will no longer accept paper applications.*


The Board's office will be closed to the public starting 4:30pm on Wednesday June 17, 2026 and will reopen for business at 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 22.  We will be introducing a new system (MDH CHART) and to support the final transition, the office and all online services will be unavailable to the public. Effective June 1, 2026, individuals applying for initial certification as a Registered Nurse — Forensic Nurse Examiner (RN-FNE), Registered Nurse — Workers' Compensation Medical Case Manager (RN-WCCM), or Certified Medication Technician (MT) will be required to complete a CJIS Criminal Background Check.​

Certified Nursing Assistant Redesignation: UPDATE - the CNA emergency regulations have been approved, effective April 3, 2026, and are set to expire September 30, 2026.

Effective 4/6/26 due to a decrease in mail volume, internal mail delivery throughout the Department of Health will be on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday delivery and pickup cadence. This may mean that a mailed application could take an additional day to get to its final destination here at the Board of Nursing. Please take that into account as you prepare to send timely correspondence.​
Individu​als whose CNA-I or CNA-II certificates expire in March, April, or May 2026 are strongly encouraged to complete the renewal process using the folllowing steps.​

The scheme involving fraudulent calls that appear to originate from the Board of Nursing indicating that the Board is calling to collect fees or fines owed in the course of the certification/licensure process.

The scam sends an email, USPS mailed letter or a phone call claiming the victim is under investigation for laundering money and dealing drugs.

Licensed Certified Midwives (LCMs)

This notice is to inform you that the Maryland Board of Nursing, in accordance with House Bill 758/Senate Bill 684 of the 2021 General Assembly session, has revised its regulations for the licensure establishment of Licensed Certified Midwives (LCMs).
The Notice of Final Action for COMAR 10.69.XX BOARD OF NURSING—LICENSED CERTIFIED MIDWIVES was published in the Division of State Document's Maryland Register on August 22, 2025, and will have an effective date of February 22, 2026.

The consumer perspective is crucial to the Committee's effectiveness, offering public insight and contributing to the optimal well-being of both mother and baby through safe practices.

UPDATE on English Language Proficiency Requirements: New Law:  Effective October 1, 2025. In accordance with Senate Bill 72 / Chapter 732, a n applicant may not be required to provide additional evidence of english proficiency if the applicant holds a valid, unrestricted license, certification, or registration from another state that requires evidence of english proficiency for licensure, certification, or registration.


​​ Certified Dialysis Technicians (CDT): The Maryland Board of Nursing, in accordance with House Bill 218 of the 2022 General Assembly session, has amended its regulations to create a separate certification for Certified Dialysis Technicians (CDTs). These amendments will impact current CNA-DTs and will establish a new CDT initial and renewal application process, among other changes.
