General Board Membership Information

The Board of Social Work Examiners (the Board) consists of 12 members, of which nine are licensed social workers and two are consumers. The Governor appoints all members of the Board with the advice of the Secretary of the Department of Health and the consent of the Senate. Candidates for the Board are selected from a list of nominees containing names submitted by:

  • Professional social work associations in the State
  • Any person who provides a statement of nomination signed by at least 15 social workers licensed in the State; or
  • The secretaries of public agencies of the State where social workers are employed.

Except for the Licensed Bachelors Social Worker member and the Licensed Graduate Social Worker member, each social worker member of the Board shall have been licensed in the State for 5 years immediately preceding the appointment and actively employed in the field of social work for at least 3 of the 5 years immediately preceding the appointment.

The term of a member is 4 years. A member may not serve more than 2 consecutive full terms.

The 2 consumer members are members of the general public who have never been a social worker and who do not have members of their household in the field of social work.

All Board members must be residents of the State.

Thank you for considering to serve the social work profession and the citizens of Maryland.
