Birth Certificates

The health department can issue certified copies of birth certificates for individuals born in Maryland from 1940 to the present. Walk-ins are accepted Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.   Birth certificates may only be obtained by individuals named on the certificate (such as the mother, father, or individual who is the subject of the birth certificate).

The individual or parent can apply in person at the Health Department with a valid, government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, U.S. passport, MVA photo ID card, or military photo ID). The photo ID must have an issue and expiration date. If your ID has expired, please call for additional information.

The fee for each birth certificate is $20 (cash, local checks, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover card accepted). With proof of military service, there is no fee for a birth certificate for a current or former armed forces member when the certificate is requested by that member.

Birth certificates for years prior to 1940 and birth certificate requests involving court orders, powers of attorney, or notarized letters must be requested from the Division of Vital Records. For details, see https://health.maryland.gov/vsa/Pages/birth.aspx.
