What is an Immunization Information System? |
ImmuNet is Maryland's immunization information system (IIS). An IIS is a confidential and secure computer database designed to collect and maintain vaccination records of children and adults. Utilization of the IIS promotes cost-effective and efficient disease prevention, which leads to better health for Maryland's citizens.
IIS have proved successful in meeting social and fiscal goals. An IIS can identify pockets of at-risk children and target resources in these areas to protect at-risk children. Moreover, IIS continue to prove their cost-effectiveness. For example, the cost of manually retrieving data for school forms without an IIS is $14.50 compared to just $3.91 to maintain a child in an IIS. |
Reasons Why ImmuNet is Necessary |
- Physicians overestimate how many of their patients are fully immunized.
- Parents often are not aware of their child’s immunization status.
- Due to poor record-keeping, a child may receive too many vaccinations.
- Duplicate vaccination costs are estimated at $15 million annually.
- Most providers do not have immunization reminder systems.
- High risk and under-immunized populations are easily identifiable with an IIS.
|
Benefits to Providers |
- Save staff time to search or replace patient vaccination records.
- Improve healthcare delivery to your patients (capability to print reminders).
- Access a patient’s consolidated history of immunizations received from multiple healthcare providers.
- Assists in vaccine management and prevents costly vaccine waste by avoiding unnecessary doses.
- Achieve reporting requirements or quality improvement measures.
- Electronically submit vaccination data and avoid manual data entry.

Start Using ImmuNet Today |
Most computers with high-speed internet access are adequate to use ImmuNet, which supports all browsers but Google Chrome is recommended for optimum performance.
Authorized users can access ImmuNet by enrolling here.
Once the Maryland Department of Health receives the enrollment, you will be contacted with your login information. In the meantime, please refer to the user guides and training videos below to learn how to use ImmuNet.
Note: Authorized users from out of state are encouraged to sign up with their own state IIS. Maryland is working towards inter-jurisdictional data exchange where you may be able to find your patient's Maryland records through your state IIS. |
Report to ImmuNet All Vaccines Administered |
As of October 2019, all vaccinations administered in the State of Maryland are required to be reported to ImmuNet, regardless of patient opt-out status in ImmuNet (see more info in the Patient Opt-Out section below). Please see this page to ensure you are in compliance with the State Statute §18–109(d)(6)(I)3 Report to ImmuNet all vaccines administered.

Looking for Your Patient's Vaccination Records? |
Maryland providers who are authorized ImmuNet users but do not have access to ImmuNet are encouraged to sign up for access to ImmuNet here. Out-of-State providers should encourage their patients to access their own Maryland records via MyIR, otherwise out-of-state providers may request records with this Record Request form. Note that requestors must self-identify by checking the acknowledgement statement (under penalty of perjury) before submitting the form.
Patients can access their own vaccination records directly via the MyIR portal here. MDH provides these MyIR brochures for printing and distribution, or complete the brochure request form here to have brochures mailed to your office.

Patient Opt-Out |
Maryland is an Opt-Out state. Per §18-109(d), patients may refuse to permit authorized users of ImmuNet access to their records.
If your patients do not wish to share their or their child’s vaccination record with all providers, including yourself, in ImmuNet, they must complete an Opt-Out form here. Hard copies (here) can be downloaded for printing and distribution.
If they change their minds and wish to allow their/their child’s records made available to their/their child’s provider(s) again, they must complete a Rescind Opt-Out from here. Hard copies (here) can be downloaded for printing and distribution.
Clients who have opted out in ImmuNet do not wish their records to be made available to authorized Immunet users. Providers may request those immunization records with a Release of Opted-Out Record form here.
Note: Completing forms online is preferred, however, If you must complete a hard copy of any form, please email it using a secure email service if your form contains any PHI/PII to prevent exposing any sensitive information. You can contact ImmuNet Support to send you a secure email to submit your hard copy form.
