Drug use

The 2019 SEADS report is an ethnographic study of people who use drugs (PWUD) in Maryland that offers rich, detailed insights at state and county levels.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) annually conducts a National Survey on Drug Us​​​e a​nd Health (NSD​UH)​ for drug use, substance use disorders, ​​substance use treatment, mental illness, and more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) surveys middle school and high school students about drug use, risk behaviors, and more. Explore YRBSS data​, export data tables, or read about YRBSS​.​​

The CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an annual survey of U.S. adult residents regarding their health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services.

​Nonfatal overdose

Nonfatal overdose data from EMS naloxone administrations and Emergency Department visits in Maryland is publicly available on the Maryland Overdose Data Dashboard.

​Additional Maryland data is available to Local Health Departments through ESSENCE, ODMAP, EMS, and law enforcement. Please reach out to your Local Health Department for data on bad batches and overdose hot spots.​

Fatal overdose​

Maryland fatal overdose data (current and historic) is publicly available on the Maryland Overdose Data Dashboard.

The Maryland Department of Health Vital Statistics Administration (MDH VSA) publishes quarterly and annual repo​rts on overdose deaths in Maryland​.​

CDC’s State Unintentional Dru​g Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) dashb​oard​ shows data on unintentional and undetermined intent drug overdose deaths from death certificates, medical examiner or coroner reports, and postmortem toxicology results in the United States.

CDC WISQARS is an interactive, online collection of tools to analyze fatal, nonfatal, and cost of injury data in the United States.

CDC WONDER​​ is an online, interactive tool that generates reports on cause of death data, including fatal overdose, in the United States.

Maryland SUDORS​ publishes statewide and regional reports on the circumstances of fatal overdoses.

Between 2020-2023, MDH produced annual Data-Informed Overdose Risk Mitigation (DORM)​ reports​ examining the treatment, prescription, and service utilization history of individuals who experienced a fatal overdose in Maryland. Taken together, the ​examination of these factors helps to identify common factors associated with overdose risk.​​
