What is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a public health insurance program. It is free or low-cost health insurance for eligible low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities. It is the largest health care program in the United States.

In Maryland, Medicaid covers about 1.5 ​million people. Nearly one in four Marylanders get their health insurance through Medicaid. Half of those covered are children. Locally, people also call it Medical Assistance.

​June 1, 2026 -  Medicaid Check-In Campaign Launch

​A new federal law, H.R. 1, signed by President Trump, changes Medicaid eligibility requirements and will significantly affect Maryland Medicaid members. Over the coming months, many Marylanders will need to take action to keep their health coverage.

The Maryland Department of Health, Maryland Health Connection, HealthChoice managed care organizations and community partners are working together to help Maryland families navigate these new changes.

To support this effort, today a statewide Medicaid Check-In campaign launched. This coordinated outreach initiative is designed to help Medicaid members understand upcoming program changes, know when action may be required and access trusted information and help. The campaign includes new web pages with educational and outreach resources that stakeholders can use and share within their communities.
