Medicaid Family Planning Program

The Medicaid Family Planning Program is an income based, limited benefits plan for those who are not eligible for Medicaid. This program is not full health care coverage.

The program is free for eligible people of all ages. There are no premiums, deductibles, or copays for services or birth control.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Medicaid Family Planning Program, you must 

The only way to know for sure if you are eligible is to apply.

You are not eligible for the Medicaid Family Planning Program if you:

  • Have or are eligible for full Medicaid coverage or another Medicaid program
  • Have Medicare
  • Had your tubes tied or vasectomy - sterilized
  • Are pregnant

Apply Any Time

You can apply for the Medicaid Family Planning Program any time. If you are eligible, your coverage can start right away. Learn how to apply​.

Benefits

You can choose any Medicaid Family Planning Program provider for services. Some benefits include:

  • Exam and advice about birth control
  • Birth control: prescription, over the counter, IUD, implant, and emergency 
  • Screening tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hepatitis, and HIV
  • Cervical and breast cancer screening and diagnosis only
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

Talk to your Medicaid Family Planning provider about getting your tubes tied or a vasectomy. You must be at least 21 years old.

The program does not cover prenatal care or infertility services. This program is not eligible for Medicaid non-emergency medical transportation.
