Direct Entry Midwife Advisory Committee

MBON is currently seeking applications for the Consumer Member position on the Direct-Entry Midwifery Advisory Committee. Individuals who are passionate about maternal health are encouraged to apply! 

The Advisory Committee is instrumental in developing regulations to enhance the practice of Direct-Entry Midwives across Maryland and in ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements. 

The consumer perspective is crucial to the Committee's effectiveness, offering public insight and contributing to the optimal well-being of both mother and baby through safe practices.

Legislation passed during the 2015 legislative session authorizes the Board to license Direct-Entry Midwives to perform midwifery outside of a hospital setting, primarily in homes.  The Direct-Entry Midwifery Advisory Committee was formed in 2015 and has been working on promulgation of appropriate regulations, an application for licensure form, and other documents that have been subsequently approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing.  The regulations were adopted as of November 17, 2016.  The Board may now commence receiving applications.

​The Direct-Entry Midwifery Advisory Committee (the “Committee”) will be meeting in open session beginning at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, October 3, 2025. The Federal Government Public Health State of Emergency for the COVID-19 Pandemic ended on May 11, 2023, however, the Committee meeting will continue to be held by conference call/Webex only. ​
