Electrology Continuing Education Requirement
Twenty (20) clock hours of Board-approved Continuing Education Units (CEUs) must be completed by October 28 of each renewal year.
CEUs related to the practice of Electrology may be obtained for the 2-year period, up to the maximum specified as follows:
Six (6) CEUs in the area of business management
Three (3) CEUs in CPR
Three (3) CEUs in First Aid
Six (6) CEUs by home study
Eight (8) CEUs for each preparation and delivery of a lecture or published article and
Any education earned by attending a course, seminar or speaker session relevant to the clinical aspect of Electrology offered by a:
College or university approved by MHEC
State or National professional Electrology association
Board approved Electrology program, or
Health Department or hospital
Submit copies of CEU certificates with your renewal application. They are due at the time of renewal and no extensions for obtaining the required CEUS will be authorized.
ACCEPTABLE ELECTROLOGY CEU TOPICS
Following is a list of topics that the Electrology Practice Committee, with subsequent approval of the Maryland Board of Nursing, has identified as relevant to the clinical aspect of Electrology for CEU courses that fall under COMAR 10.53.04.04A.
Please note:
Any course taken to meet Continuing Education Requirements for renewal of your Electrology license must be related to the practice of Electrology! The topics are:
Anatomy and physiology of the skin
Anatomy and physiology of the hair
Bacteriology
Sanitation, disinfection and sterilization
Dermatology
Neurology
Cardiovascular system
Endocrine system (emphasis on adrenal glands and ovaries)
Hirsutism (causes, testing, treatment)
Alternative methods of hair removal including laser, waxing
Contraindications for electrolysis treatment
Patient case history and record keeping
Professional ethics
Consultations
Electrolysis, thermolysis, blend
Electricity/Epilators (as it relates to Electrology)
Probe types and performance
Interpretation of hair growth patterns and regrowth
Draping, positioning, lighting
Post treatment and patient after care for the skin
Insertions and epilators
Normal and abnormal healing of the skin
Maryland State Law and Regulations for Electrology
Business management, advertising, fiscal, office computer programs such as Quick Books, office operations, websites, social media
Polycystic ovarian syndrome
CPR – 3 credits allowed
First Aid – 3 credits allowed
Home Study – No preapproval needed for AEA home study or Journal of Electrology courses. Courses offered by Institute of Natural Resources (INR), HIS, and other continuing education course presenters must be pre-approved by the Electrology Practice Committee at least two months prior to taking the course.
PRE-APPROVED CEUs
Maryland Association of Professional Electrologists, Inc. (MAPE)
provides at least 10 CEUs each year at two to three general meetings which may include the annual seminar. MAPE continuing education is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing (BON) regulations for Electrologists' license renewal. MAPE continuing education is also approved by the American Electrology Association, Inc. (AEA).
American Electrology Association (AEA)
meetings offer continuing education sessions acceptable as CEUs for Electrologists' license renewal in Maryland.

APPLICATION FOR CEU COURSE APPROVAL
For pre-approval of a CEU course that does not fall within the list of pre-approved topics and /or is not offered by a college or university approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), a state or national professional Electrology association, a board-approved Electrology program or a health department or hospital, you must complete and submit the following application PRIOR to taking the course.
