APPLYING FOR AN ASSISTED LIVING MANAGER LICENSE IN MARYLAND
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The Online Application Portal for Assisted Living Manager applicants seeking an initial license is tentatively scheduled to launch on April 15, 2026. A website link to the portal will be made available to applicants when the portal goes live.
Criminal History Record Check (CHRC)
The issuance of the Originating Agency Identifier (ORI) number required for the national background check is currently pending. As a result, individuals who intend to apply for an Assisted Living Manager license are not able to complete the Criminal History Record Check at this time.
Once the ORI number has been issued, a notice will be posted on the Board’s website, and direct communication will be sent to Assisted Living Managers currently working in licensed Assisted Living Programs in Maryland.

Effective July 1, 2026, an individual shall be licensed by the Board before the individual may practice as an assisted living manager in the State. This requirement is in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 10.33.03.01A.
An individual applying for initial licensure as an Assisted Living Manager (ALM) must submit an online application through the Board's Online Application Portal and shall attest to or provide evidence satisfactory to the Board that all requirements have been met in accordance with:
- Annotated Code of Maryland, Health Occupations Article, Title 9
- COMAR 10.33.01 – 10.33.08

License Categories
Applicants must apply under the appropriate category:
- Applicant I – Practiced as an Assisted Living Manager in a licensed Assisted Living Program in Maryland prior to July 1, 2026
- Applicant II – Have NOT practiced as an Assisted Living Manager in a licensed Assisted Living Program in Maryland prior to July 1, 2026
How to Apply
- All applications must be completed and submitted through the Board's Online Application Portal
- Internet access is required (Home, office, library)
- A valid and active email address is needed
Step 1: Review Requirements
Carefully review the licensing requirements to determine whether you qualify as:
- Applicant I, or
- Applicant II
Before beginning the application process, ensure you meet all applicable requirements.
Step 2: Create an Account
- Create a user account in the Online Application Portal.
- You will receive an Application ID Number. Check your email inbox, spam, junk, and trash folders to locate your first email with your Application ID. You will need the Application ID number throughout the application process.
- Follow the portal instructions to:
- Complete the application
- Upload ALL required documents
- Pay applicable fees (Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card only)
Step 3: Application Review
A member of the licensing staff will review your application for completeness
and compliance with licensing requirements.
- You will receive system-generated notifications regarding:
- Application status
- Missing documents
- Additional required actions
- Approximate processing time from submission of a completed application to issuance of initial license: 10 days
- Processing time may vary depending on application volume.
Important Fee Notice
- The $100 application fee is non-refundable.
- Once submitted, the fee cannot be refunded, even if the application process is not completed.
Application Validity
An application will be void if all licensure requirements are not met within one (1) year of the Board's receipt of the application.
If the application becomes void:
- A new application and fee are required.
- The applicant must meet the licensure requirements in effect at the time of reapplication.
