​ Important Notice: Transition to New Online Licensing System​

The Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists is transitioning to a new online licensing system to improve efficiency, transparency, and application processing times.

Effective June 20, 2026 (120 days from February 20, 2026), the Board will begin accepting applications and payments exclusively through the new online system.

⚠️ After June 20, 2026, any paper or emailed application submissions will be rejected and returned.

During this transition period, we encourage all applicants and licensees to prepare for the change and monitor the Board’s website for detailed instructions and system updates.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to enhance our services. While we implement this new system, response and processing times may temporarily increase. We ask for your understanding as we ensure a smooth transition for all applicants and licensees.

Public Comment Opportunity at Board Meetings

The Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists invites members of the public to speak during the open session of scheduled Board meetings.

Details:

  • Maximum of 3 speakers per meeting

  • First-come, first-served

  • 2 - 3 minutes per speaker

  • The form must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the next Board meeting.

  • Topics are subject to Board approval based on the summary you provide.

To All Maryland Board Approved Supervisors

The Board would like to clarify how a licensed clinician who holds a supervisor status should indicate this information as part of their qualifications in their field of practice. Having a supervisor status is not a license and should not be included as part of your credential such as i.e., LCPCs or CAC-ADs etc. Those with supervisor status should indicate this information as a sperate part of their documentation or verification.  Our website has information on Board approved supervisors available to the public for verification purposes. 

The Board hopes that this will alleviate any confusion for those who would like to document their status as a supervisor in a professional and legal manner.

Implicit Bias Training Required for 2022​ Renewal

Enacted under Article II, § 17(c) of the Maryland Constitution, May 30, 2021 The law requires all health care practitioners in Maryland to attest that they have completed an implicit bias training program on their license renewal application. More Information Here​​.

​​Clarification Regarding ADT Practice

Alcohol and drug trainees are authorized by statute to provide alcohol and drug counseling under the supervision of approved alcohol and drug supervisors. The approved supervisors are authorized by law to use telehealth in providing those services; thus, the trainees would similarly be authorized to provide these services using telehealth (under the conditions set forth in statute and regulation). The Secretary of Health’s April 6, 2020 Order was a clarification of that existing authority, as is the 2021 legislation effective on October 1, 2021 (Ch. 797, Acts of 2021).
