Module # 10 – Infants and Mothers with Special Needs

Overview:

Module # 10 discusses factors and reasons that may require additional support with feeding both in infants and mothers. It will cover topics on feeding needs of infants with low birth weight, premature birth and medical conditions; mothers breastfeeding multiple babies and their nutritional needs; medication and breastfeeding; and breastfeeding management. It also discusses how breastfeeding can act as a natural contraception.

Objectives:

  • Identify infants and mothers who need additional support with feeding, such as low birth weight, preterm and ill infants and mothers breastfeeding multiple babies.
  • Provide specific strategies for mothers on how to breastfeed multiple babies in the most effective way.
  • Discuss management of infant medical concerns and common maternal illnesses.
  • Provide education regarding various myths around breastfeeding and diseases and encourage to continue to breastfeed even in these special cases.
  • Provide nutrition and diet recommendations for lactating mothers.
  • Provide education on when it is not safe to breastfeed.
  • Discuss benefits of breastfeeding acting as a natural contraception.
