In 2017 the General Assembly consolidated the work of three councils and established the State Advisory Council on Health and Wellness (Chapter 40, Acts of 2017). The Council advises the Maryland Department of Health on chronic disease prevention, health, and wellness. The Council also promotes evidence-based programs for healthy lifestyles, prevention, early detection, and treating chronic diseases. The Council has four Committees meeting bimonthly :
Arthritis Committee
Diabetes Committee
Heart Disease and Stroke Committee
Physical Fitness Committee
The State Advisory Council on Health and Wellness also serves as the Advisory Committee for the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant (PHHS). The Advisory Committee meets twice yearly to review and approve the PHHS work plan, budget, and progress. The PHHS Block Grant Program allows states, territories, and tribes to address emerging and ongoing health issues and health disparities. PHHS supports local programs, collects surveillance data, targets preventable risk factors, and addresses social determinants of health. Activities facilitated by PHHS align with the Healthy People 2030 Objectives.
