Maryland Advisory Council on Health and Wellness

The State Advisory Council on Health and Wellness was established in 2017 (Chapter 40, Acts of 2017) to advise the Maryland Department of Health on chronic disease prevention, health, and wellness. The Council is also charged with promoting evidence-based programs for healthy lifestyles and the prevention, early detection, and treatment of chronic disease.

When it was established in 2017, the Council consolidated the work of three previous Councils (archived below). Their work continues through permanent Council Committees.  In addition, a new focus area, Diabetes, is also represented by a permanent Committee within the Council.

Maryland’s FY22 PHHS Work Plan

The State Advisory Council on Health and Wellness also serves as the Advisory Committee for the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant (PHHS). The Advisory Committee meets twice per year to review and approve the PHHS work plan, budget, and progress.

The PHHS Block Grant Program allows states, territories, and tribes to address emerging and ongoing health issues and health disparities by supporting local programs, collecting surveillance data, targeting preventable risk factors, and addressing social determinants of health. Activities align with the Healthy People 2030 Objectives.
