Maryland Code, Health Occupations Article § 8-6A-01(i) defines "Certified Dialysis Technician" as an individual who:
- Has completed a Board-approved dialysis technician program; and
- Is certified by the Board as a dialysis technician.
*Initial and Endorsement CDT certificates*
Until further notice, due to pending federal approval for updating the livescan fingerprint form for background checks, there will be a delay with issuing initial and endorsement CDT certificates.

Qualifications for Endorsement for Out-of-State Dialysis Technicians include:
- Completion of the Board’s CDT Endorsement application;
- Submission of a copy of the applicant’s DT certificate in good standing issued by another state;
- Submission of a certificate of completion from a dialysis technician training program in another state ;
- If applicable, submission of a copy of the applicant’s national dialysis technician certification as a CCHT by NNCC, CNT by NNCO, or a CHT by BONENT; and
- Completion of a background check.

Renewal Information:
- Certification as a CDT is for a two-year period following the first renewal date. CDTs will renew every other year on their birth month depending on their year of birth.
- If you were born in an even-numbered year, your certification will expire on the 28th day of your birth month during an even-numbered year.
- If you were born in an odd-numbered year, your certification will expire on the 28th day of your birth month during an odd-numbered year.
- Newly certified CDTs: You are still required to renew your CDT certificate when it is scheduled to expire based on the above schedule UNLESS your certificate was issued within 180 days of the date of expiration. After the first renewal, you will be renewed for the full two years.
- The CDT must have practiced as a CDT and have 16 hours of active practice for monetary compensation within the two years immediately preceding the CDT’s date of expiration.
- The CDT must also complete a total of three hours of continuing education approved by the Board.
- If the CDT has not practiced for the required 16 hours or has not completed three hours of continuing education, the applicant will need to retake a Board-approved CDT training program.
- Note: A CDT may not practice on an expired national certification. If your national certification expires before your scheduled renewal date, please submit a record of your renewed national certification to the Board.
