Dry Needling Registration & Approved Courses

Dry Needling Registration (COMAR 10.43.16.05)

To perform dry needling in Maryland, a chiropractor must:
  • Be registered with the Board of Chiropractic Examiners
  • Hold physical therapy privileges
  • Be in good standing with the Board

A chiropractor must complete at least 80 hours of training, including:​
  1. ​60 hours of Foundational Coursework (60 Hours) covering: Foundations; Basic sciences; Clinical sciences; Professional practice OR Completion of coursework required for the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners exams (Parts I–IV and Physiotherapy)
  2. 20 Hours Board-Approved Hands-On Training
Training must be completed in a classroom setting and include:
  • History and principles of dry needling
  • Indications and contraindications
  • Patient and provider safety
  • Clinical protocols and use as a diagnostic tool
  • Case management and legal considerations​
Hands-on competency must include:​
  • Spine: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, pelvic regions
  • Thorax and ribs (anterior and posterior)
  • Upper and lower extremities
  • Face and head
  • Technique and needle selection
Dry Needling courses completed before May 18, 2020 may be accepted if:​​
  • ​​The course is substantially similar and from a Board-approved provider, and
  • The chiropractor completes a 3-hour dry needling recertification course​


Fees: A one-time registration fee is $100, and is payable using the Chiro Portal​​.

Chiropractors planning to take a course not included in the above table must first obtain Board approval befo​re registering by submitting a Continuing Education Unit Course Approval Application​. Dry Needling course approval will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
