In 2016, the Legislature provided for the separation of the joint State Board of Chiropractic and Massage Therapy Examiners. Effective October 1, 2016, the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners and the State Board of Massage Therapy Examiners became two separate entities.
The Board is comprised of seven volunteer members: four licensed chiropractors and two consumer members. Laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of chiropractic may be found at Md. Code Annotated, Health Occupations Article, §§3-101, et seq. and the Code of Maryland Regulations 10.43.01, et seq.

The Board meets the second Thursday of each odd month at 10am unless otherwise announced. General Session meetings are open to the public. Anyone may petition the Board to have an issue placed on the General Session Agenda. Such petitions must be in writing and submitted to the Executive Director at least two weeks before the scheduled meeting. Executive Session meetings usually follow the General Session and are closed to the public.
The primary function of the Board is to protect the healthcare public. This is accomplished by ensuring that chiropractors and chiropractic assistants are properly licensed, trained, and educated. In addition, it is the duty of the Board to ensure that licensees and registrants comply with laws and regulations pertaining to their respective scope of practice.
The Board is responsible for all licensing functions for chiropractors and chiropractic assistants, including continuing education requirements. The Board is also responsible for conducting investigations and disciplinary hearings relating to any violations of applicable laws and regulations.
