Zika virus: a virus spread to people through mosquito bites of Aedes species mosquitoes. Zika virus can also be spread through sexual transmission. No local mosquito-borne transmission of Zika virus has been identified in Maryland at this time.
The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.
Unborn babies who contract Zika virus disease could develop birth defects, including microcephaly and congenital Zika syndrome. Pregnant women should take special precautions to avoid contracting Zika virus disease. Prevent mosquito bites by wearing insect repellent with DEET, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and repairing screens on windows and doors.
