Diabetes is a life-lon​g disease which affects the way the body handles glucose, which is a kind of sugar, in the blood. There are several types of ​diabetes, the most common being type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than​ normal, but not high enough to be diabetes.

Diabetes and prediabetes are serious conditions that can lead to complications including heart disease and stroke, vision loss, amput​ations, and kidney disease.

According to the 2019 Maryland Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, In Maryland, 10.2% or 467,041 adults have diabetes. According to the CDC, approximately 38% of adults have prediabetes, which equates to approximately 1.8 million adults in Maryland.​​
