Registered Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse

Biennial License Renewal

Starting January 1, 2013, the Board of Nursing will begin to phase in biennial (every two years) renewal of licenses. Legislation passed in 2010 (Senate Bill 632/House Bill 624) requires the Board to change to a two year renewal term in accordance with Health Occupations Article, §8-312(a)(2), Annotated Code of Maryland. On-line renewals for January, 2013, will be available on or about December 1, 2012. Renewals will be in accordance with the following schedule.
  • Beginning in January, 2013, every licensee with an odd birth year shall renew for a two year term.
  • Beginning in 2013 any licensee with an even birth year shall be renewed for one year only.
  • Beginning in January 2014, every licensee with an even birth year shall renew for a two year term.

Fees will be doubled for a two year renewal term and will be determined by the month the license expires and NOT according to the date of the renewal.

For example: If your license expires in January 2013, and you renew in November or December 2012, you will pay double the current annual fee. The two year renewal fee is $110.00 plus the assessment for the Maryland Health Care Commission User Fee, in accordance with COMAR 10.25.02 and .03.
If you have any questions about the two year renewal term please send an e-mail to the Board of Nursing at: [email protected]. More information can also be found on the Board’s web site at:
