You MUST submit proof of national certification each year you renew. Copies should be mailed or faxed to the Board.
- Please read the instructions for RN license renewal first.
- The following individuals CAN NOT renew online:
- Anyone with a felony, misdemeanor, or discipline against a license since last renewal
- Any license type beginning with 'AC'. This license type belongs to Advanced Practice nurses with a RN license residing in a Compact State

- Clinical Nurse Specialist Renewals
Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) wishing to renew your certification for CNS are required to send a copy of your current national certification, with a $10.00 check for the two year renewal, to the Maryland Board of Nursing, attention to Sharon Allen. Until the Maryland Board of Nursing is able to fund fully online applications, CNS renewal applications must be submitted as a hard copy. We encourage you to continue to use the on-line renewal application feature for your RN. We apologize for any inconvenience.
- Proof of certification must still be mailed to the Board or faxed to (410)-358-3530. CRNM's must send a copy of the AMCB CCA cycle card, or a copy of the AMCB certificate with expiration date. Board recognized national certification boards/ include:
- ANCC (American Nurses’ Credentialing Center) - Adult, Pediatric, Family, Geriatric, School Nurse and Acute Care and Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric & Mental Health
- NCC (The National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties) - OB/GYN and Neonatal
- CCNA/CRNA (Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists / Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetist) - Nurse Anesthetists
- PNCB (The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board) - Pediatrics
- AANP (The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners) - Adult and Family
- AMCB (American Midwifery Certification Board), formerly known as the ACNM Certification Council
- AACN (American Association of Critical Care Nurses) - Acute Care Nurse Practitioners
Certification from Boards other than the above will not currently qualify you for certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Maryland. Please call the Board at 410-585-1930 or 410-585-1926.
- NOTE: The Board will not issue requests for copies of National Certification.
- RENEWAL APPLICATIONS WITHOUT PROOF OF CURRENT NATIONAL CERTIFICATION ARE INCOMPLETE. THE BOARD WILL NOT PROCESS INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS
