To obtain initial GNA certification:
A. Complete an approved GNA course;A. Complete an approved GNA course;A. Complete an approved GNA course;A. Complete an approved GNA course;
B. Obtain CNA certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing;
C. Apply to MDGNATS for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant Examination;
D. Results of the examination will be forwarded to the Board and MDGNATS will notify the candidate of the results;
E. For those passing the examination, the Board will indicate on the database that the individual is certified as a GNA, which will appear on online and telephone verification.
Note: No new certificate will be issued. GNA certification will appear on the CNA certificate at the next renewal.
F. Renewal
GNA shall obtain verification from employer of the required 8 hours of work as a GNA in a comprehensive care facility in the two years immediately preceding renewal of the certification on the form and in the manner required by the Board.

If GNA or other certifications cannot be verified during processing, the individual will not receive these designations o the CNA certificate.
