Maryland Code, Health Occupations Article § 8-6D-01(g) defines "Certified Midwife" as an individual who:
- Has been issued a license by the Board under this subtitle to practice certified midwifery.
- Licensed Certified Midwife does not include a licensed direct-entry midwife or a licensed nurse certified as a nurse-midwife under this title.
Qualifications for Initial CM licensure include:
- An applicant must hold a current, valid certification as a certified midwife from the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB);
- Completion of a graduate-level accredited program for midwifery education approved by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME); and
- Have passed the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) examination.

Renewal Information:
- All Certified Midwife licenses expire on October 28th of every even year cycle.
- Newly Licensed CMs: You are still required to renew your license when it is scheduled to expire based on the above schedule if you are licensed within a renewal year. After your first renewal your license will be valid for 2 years.
- If this is your first renewal, you must complete an implicit bias training program approved by the Cultural and Linguistic Health Care Professional Competency Program under § 20-1306 of the Health-General Article.
