Criminal Background Checks

Fingerprinting Requirements

As of January 1, 2015, a full criminal history check (both State and FBI) is required as a condition of licensure. The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) conducts the criminal history check and provides the Maryland Board of Physical Therapy with the results.

To comply with a criminal history check, applicants may visit any authorized fingerprintingservice location in Maryland to be fingerprinted or if you reside outside of Maryland, you may request a Maryland-approved fingerprint card from the Criminal Justice Information System - Central Repository.

Download the Fingerprinting Instructions for Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant Licensing Applicants to obtain all of the required information to complete the fingerprinting process!

Please DO NOT call the Board’s offices for an update on a background check. The check is completed by a separate state agency. The Board has no control over the amount of time it takes to complete the check. If you have not received the results of the check after thirty (30) days you can contact CJIS direct at 410-764-4501.
