Extreme heat or cold can lead to serious health issues, especially for people who are living or recovering at a healthcare facility like a nursing home. That is why it is so important for healthcare facilities to be prepared for any situation that could cause patients and residents to be exposed to extreme temperatures.
Key Areas of Focus for Seasonal Preparedness:
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems:
Regularly inspect and maintain HVAC systems to ensure they can regulate indoor temperatures appropriately for both hot summer and cold winter months. Check for proper ventilation and air quality; these systems are vital for residents' comfort and health.
Consider performing seasonal maintenance checks to keep systems running at peak performance and efficiency.
Backup Generators, if applicable:
Ensure that your backup generator is fully operational and capable of providing power in an emergency. Test the generator to confirm that it functions correctly, is fueled, and is ready for use.
If any issues are found, we recommend addressing them as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary delays during an emergency.
Communication with Local Health Departments:
In the event of a disaster, please contact your local health department to confirm your facility’s power status and coordinate assistance if needed.
Local health departments can provide valuable resources and support to help ensure your residents remain safe and comfortable during power outages or other emergencies.
Maryland Heat Stress Standard:
Maryland's heat stress standard, COMAR 09.12.32 went into effect September 30, 2024. The standard applies to all workplaces where the heat index is 80° F or higher.
More information, including additional resources and guidance documents, may be found on the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) website.

Taking these proactive steps will help protect your patients and residents and provide peace of mind knowing that your facility is prepared for whatever the seasons may bring.
