Non-occupational Postexposure Prophylaxis (nPEP) Standing Order Program


The Non-occupational Post Exposure Prophylaxis (nPEP) Standing Order Program in Maryland allows licensed pharmacists to dispense nPEP under certain circumstances. The Maryland Department of Health is responsible for administering the program, including:

  • Adopting regulations for the program

  • Addressing the needs of specific populations, such as pediatric patients and victims of sexual assault

  • Establishing guidelines for program​ training 


The nPEP Standing Order Program is established by House Bill 0127 and will be effective October 1, 2024. 

Pharmacists are required to complete a comprehensive traini​​ng course before registerin​g​ for the program.

Maryland Non-Occupational Post Exposure Prophylaxis (nPEP) Standing Order Program Training

Target Audience

The educational design of this training addresses the needs of pharmacists licensed in Maryland and involved in the dispensing of nPEP via Maryland’s nPEP Standing Order Program.

Description

This comprehensive training has been developed to specifically support the needs of pharmacists who will register to participate in the Maryland nPEP Standing Order Program. A number of states in the United States have expanded the pharmacy scope of practice and this continuing education activity will provide the necessary clinical information for initiating and monitoring nPEP treatment in a pharmacy setting as indicated for Maryland’s nPEP Standing Order Program. Providing 1.0 contact hour (0.10 CEUs) from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, this training comes with a monograph and addresses all content to fulfill the Maryland Department of Health’s training requirements for pharmacists wishing to become registered to dispense nPEP, such as:

  • HIV epidemiology

  • Pharmacology, safety, and efficacy of HIV medications used for nPEP 

  • Assessment of sexual health and HIV risk

  • Screening for nPEP eligibility

  • Clinical practice guidelines for PEP eligibility and management

  • Support for sexual assault survivors 

  • Patient counseling

  • In-pharmacy implementation

  • Financial support for nPEP
