Public Health Accreditation

MDH Accreditation Overview

The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) was reaccredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) in December 2024, demonstrating our commitment to upholding the highest standards of public health excellence across Maryland.  MDH received initial accreditation in June 2017.

Reaccreditation reflects MDH’s successful completion of PHAB’s rigorous accrediting process and underscores the dedication of the Department to continuously improve public health programs and services. Public health accreditation shows that the Department has the capacity to evolve, improve health outcomes for Maryland residents, and advance health equity in our communities.

Public health accreditation is national recognition of a health department’s dedication to continuous quality improvement, accountability, and public health excellence, ensuring that the health department effectively serves its residents and communities. Maintaining public health accreditation requires MDH to engage with partners across Maryland in a continuous cycle of state health assessment and state health improvement planning and implementation. MDH must submit comprehensive documentation every five years that demonstrates it meets rigorous standards for public health practice as set by PHAB.

Twelve local health departments are currently accredited in Maryland. A list of these accredited departments can be found on the PHAB website.
