Effective March 22, 2010: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification [Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professionals] is required for initial licensure and license renewals. CPR certification and/or recertification courses are approved for CME Category A Credit for up to 3 CME hours. CPR certification courses are available from: The American Red Cross ,The American Heart Association and The American Safety and Health Institute.
Renewals for active podiatry licenses will starts in mid October. The Board now provides and recommends the option of Online Renewal. Licenses that require a renewal application and plan to forego the online renewal option, must inquire about a hard copy renewal form from the Board Office at (410) 764 4785.

A Limited License temporarily authorizes the licensee to practice podiatry under the supervision of a licensed podiatrist. While the license is effective, the limited licensee is restricted to patients of the health care facility or program that is named on the limited license. A limited license is issued for a term of one year and may be renewed annually.
A Limited License is required of all podiatric residents. A podiatrist that holds a full Active License and pursues additional training in a residency program is required to hold a Limited License in addition to other licensure options. Podiatric residents rotating in doctor's offices or ASC as part of their residency program should provide a copy of their Limited License valid for the dates of the rotation.
A Limited License is valid only for supervised training at an approved location as part of a residency program; this does not authorize the practice of podiatry outside of the residency program. Moonlighting, taking calls, or providing any type of weekend, holiday, or overnight coverage on a Limited License outside an approved residency program or an approved satellite facility is strictly prohibited.

A Full License authorizes the licensee to practice podiatry fully in the state of Maryland. A Full License runs on a two-year cycle and expires December 31st of every odd year.

The exam and lecture are requirements for ALL licensees in the state of Maryland. The exam focuses on the Maryland State Laws, Regulations as well as scope of practice issues.
All PMLexis examination candidates, planning to sit for the exam in the State of Maryland must fulfill ONE of the following requirements:
I. Must be a podiatric resident in an approved residency program in the State of Maryland; and thus have a Maryland Limited License.
II. Must be in the process of applying for a full Maryland podiatric license. (Please note that the Board must have received at least 70% of required documents; this includes especially, the Application & Licensing fees, Official Transcript from Podiatry College and the Part I & II National Board scores).
OTHERWISE,All out-of-state candidates that do not meet the above requirements must complete the Application for PMLexis Examination Eligibility to be credentialed to sit for the exam in the State of Maryland.Please be aware that it is the applicant's responsibility to return the completed application on time!

Are any controlled dangerous substances dispensed at your practice location to facilitate patient treatment?
Article 27, Section 281(a), Annotated Code of Maryland requires every person who manufactures, distributes, prescribes or dispenses any controlled dangerous substance within the State to obtain a registration (Permit) to be issued by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene every two years.Please note that you must obtain both a DEA registration number specific for a Maryland practice location along with a Maryland CDS permit.

Article 27, Section 281(d), Annotated Code of Maryland requires that a separate registration (permit) be obtained for each principal place of business that manufactures, distributes, prescribes or dispenses controlled dangerous substances.

Does your practice dispense prescription drugs?
Section 16-205(a)(2), of the Maryland Podiatry Act, states "After consulting with the State Board of Pharmacy, [the Board will] adopt rules and regulations regarding the dispensing of prescription drugs by a licensed podiatrist;" The Board utilizes the provisions of Title 10, Code of Maryland Regulations, § 10.13.01, Dispensing Prescription Drugs by a Licensee, in its review and as appropriate, issuance of the Maryland Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners Permit to Dispense.
If your practice dispenses more than starter dosages, samples (for no charge), or more than just the administering of a prescription drug in the course of treating a patient, you should apply for a Dispensing Drug Permit.
Board approval is not required if surname is used in the corporate name i.e. John Smith, D.P.M. PCHowever, the Board and the Maryland Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA) require approval for all other names. i.e. Podiatry Partners, PCLimited Liability Companies (LLC) do not need to be approved by the Board. This is because an LLC is not a corporation and the statue does not require the Board's approval. However, the name of the LLC still needs to comply with the Board's statues and laws regarding advertising.
If a podiatrist is engaged in the private practice of podiatry in Maryland, the podiatrist shall display the notice developed under §1-207 Article 16 of the Annotated Code of Maryland conspicuously in each office where the podiatrist is engaged in practice.

Podiatrists who sell goods/products over-the-counter and also maintain an inventory of over $1000 are required to maintain a Sales and Use tax License.

Please note that a podiatry license cannot be placed on Inactive Status until after the current licensing cycle. The licensing cycle ends on December 31 of every odd year.
Practitioners desiring to be placed on Inactive Status are required to complete the application for Inactive licensure and have it notarized, as indicated on the form. A one-time fee of $150.00 must accompany the application. Checks should be made payable to the Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners. Podiatrists on Inactive Status are also subject to a subsequent $50.00 annual fee.
Please note that, should you allow your license to lapse to Non-Renewed status either by choice or by failing to pay the annual fee of $50.00, you will be required to reapply for a Maryland podiatric license as a new licensee. This process includes any new application requirements implemented by the Board including taking the National Boards Part III Examination also known as the PMLexis. This requirement may be of particular importance to you if you never took the PMLexis exam when obtaining your original Maryland podiatry license.
In order to reinstate your Maryland podiatric license from Inactive to Active status, a licensee is required to submit documentation of having met the continuing education requirements (25 CME's per year) equal to those required for the period during which the individual has not held an active Maryland podiatric license, provided that these requirements do not exceed 125 hours. The fee for reinstatement is $300.00 in addition to the renewal fee of $1,050.00. Please see the Maryland Podiatry Act: §16-308
