Limited Private Inpatient Facilities

Description

A Limited Private Inpatient Facility (LPIF) is a private inpatient treatment facility that provides voluntary mental health evaluation and treatment to adult patients 24 hours per day.  LPIFs cannot serve individuals who have: 1) a sole diagnosis of substance abuse, intellectual disability, or dementia; 2) are in need of acute or long-term voluntary or involuntary hospital psychiatric admission; or 3) are medically unstable as determined by an individual authorized under Health Occupations Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, to make medical determinations.

OHCQ's oversight of LPIFs includes initial licensing, periodic inspections, and complaint investigations.

Maryland Regulations

Regulations related to limited private inpatient facilities are found in COMAR 10.07.16.  To order copies of COMAR regulations, contact Tarshia Neal at the Maryland Division of State Documents at 410-260-3874 or [email protected].   Regulations are also available at public libraries - Find your nearest public library.

Licensure

The first step towards licensure is to complete the License Application.  In order to complete the application, please download a copy to your device.  Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader or another *.PDF application are required to complete the application.  It is recommended that you save your progress throughout the process. Questions, comments or concerns regarding this application and its completion, can be referred to the associated program/unit within OHCQ.  Submit the completed application and all required attachments to OHCQ via the Submit an Application link.

After OHCQ reviews and approves the application and the required attachments, OHCQ will contact the applicant to schedule an on-site survey. After OHCQ determines the applicant meets all licensure requirements, a license is issued.  If the applicant is not accredited by The Joint Commission, OHCQ issues a provisional license.  The applicant has one year from the date on the provisional license to obtain accreditation.  If the facility is not accredited in one year, the provisional license will expire and the facility must cease operations.  Continued licensure is dependent on maintaining accreditation.

Requests Related To Licensure

A licensed provider submits a Change Form to notify OHCQ of changes in demographics.

If a licensee makes any changes to its facility service plan, the licensee must submit its revised plan to OHCQ and receive approval of the plan before implementation. A licensee completes and submits the Revision of a Facility Service Plan form to submit the revised plan to OHCQ for approval.

To request a waiver of the physical environment requirements in COMAR 10.07.12, a licensee completes Licensure Standards Waiver for a Limited Private Inpatient Facility Form and submits the Request for a Licensure Standards Waiver.

To report a name change of a licensed private inpatient facility, a licensee completes and submits the Report a Name Change form.
