Assisted Living Referrers

Description

An assisted living referrer is an individual or agency that (1) makes referrals to assisted living programs without cost to the person receiving the referral and (2) is compensated by an assisted living program or other third party for referring individuals to a licensed assisted living program. 

Maryland Law

Health - General §19–1813 requires all referrers to assisted living programs to register with the Office of Health Care Quality (OHCQ).  This law went into effect on October 1, 2020. 

Passage of SB0952- Assisted Living Programs - Assisted Living Refererrs Requirements and Prohibitions (Chapter 0839). This law goes into effect on October 1, 2024. 

Registration

To register as an assisted living referrer, please complete and submit the Registration Form.  OHCQ will review your submission and contact you via email when you are registered.  

Change of Ownership

If ownership of the assisted living referrer changes, the new owner must register the entity.  The registration of the prior owner's assisted living referrer is no longer in effect. 

Change Form

Registered assisted living referrers submit the ALR Ch​ange Form to notify OHCQ of changes in ownership, name, address, contacts, phone numbers, and other demographic information. 


Complaints

Complaints regarding an assisted living referrer are investigated by the Office of the Attorney General.  To submit a complaint through OHCQ, please complete the Submit a Complaint Form​.
