MHHD Celebrates Juneteenth!
For the first time in its history, the U.S. will commemorate Juneteenth with a Federal Holiday. Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On Thursday, June 17, 2021, the President signed into law: S. 475, the “Juneteenth National Independence Day Act,” which designates Juneteenth National Independence Day as a legal public holiday.1
It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day. The name “Juneteenth” references the date of the holiday, combining the words “June” and “nineteenth.”2
There are many events happening across Maryland this week to celebrate the holiday. Please check with your local district for more information.
MHHD wishes you a very safe and happy Juneteenth Holiday!
