Utilizing GIS Mapping Services for Strategic Planning

The CHRC, working with Washington College’s Geographic Information Systems Program in the Center for Environment and Society, provides GIS mapping and analysis services to our grantees, hospitals, local health departments and other safety net providers upon request.

These mapping services are provided to community health resources at no cost to the organization. Some examples of these services are listed below:

  • Analysis of patient distribution by health center for business planning purposes.
  • Analysis of patient distributions by health indicator to target resources.
  • Maps and spatial/data analysis needed to support grant efforts to include demographic analysis with Census data and other sources.
  • Resource analysis to determine prime locations for new health centers.
  • Custom requests are welcome.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires Washington College to sign a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with organizations that request GIS services for patient protected information. All data is stored in compliance with HIPAA and Maryland Department of Information technology security requirements. Please contact the CHRC to review a sample BAA and MOU that are HIPAA compliant for sharing patient protected information.

To request GIS services or learn more about the CHRC’s mapping assistance, please contact the CHRC directly. Once approved by CHRC, staff at Washington College will arrange for a technical consultation with you to review your needs and determine what data is needed to support this request.

Below is a small sample of the GIS mapping and analysis that has been done on behalf of grantees and other safety-net organizations. (Click on the images to view/print full size PDF files of maps). Due to HIPAA requirements and BAA/MOU’s with providers, many of our mapping products are not available for public display.
