Board Membership Requirements

The Board of Examiners for Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers and Speech-Language Pathologist seeks to protect the consumer public by ensuring that only qualified individuals are granted licenses to practice their profession and that complaints are investigated and resolved within reasonable timeframes.

The critical requirements to be a member of the Board are:

  1. must have at least five years’ paid work experience in profession;
  2. is currently practicing their profession in the State of Maryland;
  3. shall be a resident of the State of Maryland;
  4. may not be an employee of the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene; and
  5. may not serve as an employee, an elected officer, or a director of a professional or trade association that has members who are under the authority of the Board.

The Board meets every month, except August and December, on the third Thursday from 4:00pm to approximately 7:00pm. From time to time, board members are asked to volunteer to serve on a complaint review subcommittee from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on those days.

Board membership responsibilities include:

  1. answering Board staff questions (usually via e-mail) regarding practice specific questions;
  2. previewing and reading Board meeting packets;
  3. assisting Board staff and investigator in professional questions in investigations; and
  4. occassional participation in subject-specific standing committees and ad-hoc committees.

Board members are paid a stipend for each day conducting Board business (at least 4 hours) and travel costs are reimbursed.

Being a Board member provides an opportunity to be a part of the General Assembly mandated consumer protection process through professional licensure and provides insight into the issues and administrative functions related to professional licensure.
