The mission of the Board is to enhance the quality of the hearing and speech health care provided to the citizens of Maryland by ensuring qualified and competent audiologists, hearing aid dispensers, speech-language pathologists and music therapists are licensed to practice in the State of Maryland.
Laws and regulations for audiologists, audiology assistants, hearing aid dispensers, speech-language pathologists, speech-language pathology assistants and music therapists may be found respectively at MD Code Annotated, Health Occupations Article, Section 2-101 et seq and Code of Maryland Regulations, 10.41.01 et seq.
The joint Board is composed of 15 volunteer members: 3 licensed audiologists, 3 licensed hearing aid dispensers, 3 licensed speech-language pathologists, 2 licensed physicians (ENT), 2 music therapists and 2 consumer members.

The Board meets on the third Thursday of every month except the month of December. The Board’s General Session meetings begin at 4:00pm and are open to the public. Anyone may petition the Board to have an issue placed on the Board agenda; such petitions must be submitted in writing c/o the Executive Director at least two (2) weeks before the scheduled General Session meeting. Executive Session meetings are closed to the public.
Function of Board/Commission:
The mission of the Board of Examiners for Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers, and Speech Language Pathologists is to protect the citizens of Maryland and promote quality health care in the fields of audiology, hearing aid dispensing and speech-language pathology by:
- Licensing qualified audiologists, hearing aid dispensers and speech-language pathologists;
- Receiving and resolving complaints from the public, courts, employers, insurance companies, and other licensees regarding audiologists, hearing aid dispensers, and speech-language pathologists who may have violated the Board's law; and
- Setting standards for the practice of audiology, hearing aid dispensing, and speech-language pathology that reflect new and emergent developments in the practice of these three health professions through regulations and statutes.
Duty to Protect the Public
The Board’s main function is to protect the consumer public of Maryland by ensuring that audiologists, audiology assistants, hearing aid dispensers, speech-language pathologists, speech-language pathology assistants and music therapists are properly licensed, are properly trained and educated, and fully comply with all required laws and regulations governing their respective scopes of practice.
