About the Board

The mission of the Board is to enhance the quality of the hearing and speech health care provided to the citizens of Maryland by ensuring qualified and competent audiologists, hearing aid dispensers and speech-language pathologists are licensed to practice in the State of Maryland.

The joint Board is composed of 13 volunteer members: 3 licensed audiologists, 3 licensed hearing aid dispensers, 3 licensed speech-language pathologists, 2 licensed physicians (ENT), and 2 consumer members.

Administrative Duties

The Board meets on the third Thursday of every month except the months of August and December. The Board’s General Session meetings begin at 4:00pm and are open to the public. Anyone may petition the Board to have an issue placed on the Board agenda; such petitions must be submitted in writing c/o the Executive Director at least two (2) weeks before the scheduled General Session meeting. Executive Session meetings are closed to the public.

The Board’s Jurisdiction and Function is to:

administer all licensing functions of audiologists, hearing aid dispensers, speech-language pathologists and speech-language pathology assistants;

ensure compliance with all continuing education requirements for the aforementioned healthcare professionals who renew their license; and

conduct all investigations and disciplinary hearings relating to any violations of laws or regulations related to licensees.

Duty to Protect the Public

The Board’s main function is to protect the consumer public of Maryland by ensuring that audiologists, hearing aid dispensers, speech-language pathologists and speech-language pathology assistants are properly licensed, are properly trained and educated, and fully comply with all required laws and regulations governing their respective scopes of practice.
