The Board endorses the need for a qualified physician’s participation with the speech- language pathologist as the best practice standard for performance of videoflouroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS). If a physician is unavailable, then a competent speech- language pathologist may perform the instrument al assessment. In th is situation, the study should be limited to the observation and documentation of swallowing physiology and function only. The speech-language pathologist should arrange for a radiologist or other qualified physician to review the study afterward.​
