Tissue Banks

Description

A tissue bank is a person or facility that provides or engages in one or more services involving tissue from living or cadaveric donors for transplantation; transfusion; transfer; or implementation purposes.  It includes, but is not limited to, the following classes: blood bank; cardiovascular tissue bank; eye bank; hematopoietic progenitor cell bank; human milk bank; musculoskeletal tissue bank; reproductive tissue bank; and skin bank.

A tissue bank service is an activity or pursuit that involves tissue intended for human transplantation; transfusion; transfer; or implementation. "Tissue bank service" includes, but is not limited to, an activity or means of donor selection or tissue collection; preparation; preservation; storage; allocation; transportation; or distribution.

Tissue is a visceral or nonvisceral collection of human cells and their associated intracellular substances.  It includes, but is not limited to, human blood, blood components, and products prepared after collection; cardiovascular tissue; cornea and other ocular tissue; hematopoietic progenitor cells; milk; musculoskeletal tissue; reproductive cells and tissue; and skin.

OHCQ is responsible for the oversight of tissue banks, including licensure and investigation of complaints.

Licensure

To apply for a license for a new tissue bank, submit the ​Maryland State Tissue Bank Application​​​​​​​​

There is no fee to apply for a Maryland Tissue Bank license.  Please remember to include with your original signature mailed submission, copies of the medical and technical director's highest degree earned, medical license, if applicable, and any board certifications.  Also include any additional items outlined on the application checklist page.  After a complete application and all requested documents are received by OHCQ, it takes 2 - 3 weeks to receive a license.
