Maryland Department of Health highlights back-to-school vaccines during National Immunization Awareness Month

Baltimore, MD— Following Governor Wes Moore's proclamation of August as Immunization Awareness Month in Maryland, the Maryland Department of Health is highlighting the importance of back-to-school vaccines to help ensure a healthy school year. A bilingual social media campaign targeting parents and caregivers will run throughout the month across the Department’s Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Bluesky accounts.

“We are grateful to Maryland parents and caregivers for keeping your children safe and ready to learn with back-to-school vaccines,” said Maryland Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani. “Vaccines are an important part of our State’s commitment to support optimal health and well-being for our children and school communities.”

The Department’s back-to-school organic digital campaign features trusted community providers—Drs. Monique Soileau-Burke, Ligia Peralta, and Andrew Ditto—highlighting immunization requirements and the importance of vaccines for different age groups. The videos are in English and Spanish.

Digital assets will be shared with community partners, including local health departments and schools, to better reach families and students. Information will also include resources and location information for accessing vaccines, including for uninsured and underinsured children, including back-to-school clinics at local health departments and schools and the Vaccines for Children program.

The Department also reminds parents and caregivers that, in addition to keeping a child updated on their vaccines, it’s important to maintain immunization records for future school and youth activities. Parents and caregivers should contact their family health provider for current vaccination records. They can also request these records online at health.maryland.gov/immunet

Maryland maintains evidence-based vaccination requirements for participation in child care and public schools. To find a local vaccination clinic, contact your local health department or visit health.maryland.gov/vaccines
