Ask The Question
Main_Content
Professionals, government agencies, community leaders and other public-facing staff and stakeholders across Maryland have a powerful tool: a simple but critical question —
"Have you or a family member ever served in the military?"
The Ask the Question training
, now available statewide, is a pioneering educational initiative designed to help professionals identify military-connected individuals and tailor care to their unique needs. Developed by the Maryland Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans and Families, this training addresses a crucial gap.
Why It Matters
Military service can have a profound impact on both physical and mental health — from exposure to environmental hazards and combat injuries to experiences with trauma, transition stress, and challenges faced by military families. Yet many providers may not know their patients’ military background unless they ask.
What the Training Covers
How and why to ask about military service — for both veterans and family members
The physical and mental health impacts of military service
Communication techniques and cultural competence
Referral resources for military-connected people
