The Center for Cancer Prevention and Control is housed in the Promotion and Health Promotion Administration’s Cancer and Chronic Disease Bureau. The mission of the Center is to reduce the burden of cancer in Maryland by:

• Providing guidance, support and funding for effective cancer programs;

• Fostering collaboration among partners; and

• Evaluating outcomes through data collection and analysis. ​

The Center receives and administers federal, state, and special funding to implement its programs.​

​The Center for Cancer Prevention and Control is made up of the following units:

1. Cancer Screening Programs Unit
   • ​This Unit manages the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP), Cigarette Restitution Fund Cancer Prevention, Education, Screening and Treatment Program (CRF-CPEST)​, and the Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP).
     
   • BCCP and CRF-CPEST administer funding to local programs such as local health departments, health systems, and hospitals. This funding is used to provide education and no-cost screening, diagnosis and/or treatment services of select cancers for program-eligible low-income, uninsured and underinsured Maryland residents.
   • BCCP and CRCCP work with local health departments, health systems, and hospitals to improve breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer screening rates among medically-underserved populations.
     
   
   
2. ​ Comprehensive Cancer Co​​ntrol Program
   • This Program works with its partners to design and implement impactful, strategic, and sustainable initiatives to prevent and control cancer in Maryland.
   • This Program convenes stakeholders across the state to develop and implement the Maryland Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. The Plan, updated every 5 years, outlines goals, data-driven objectives, and strategies to guide cancer control efforts in Maryland. Goals include reducing cancer disparities faced by various populations.
   • This Program also provides administrative support to the Maryland State Council on Cancer Control, the Maryland Cancer Collaborative, and the Maryland Patient Navigation Network.
     
   
   
3. ​ ​Maryland Cancer Registry
   • ​The Registry collects all new cases of reportable cancers diagnosed and/or treated in Maryland and is the State of Maryland’s official source for cancer statistics.
   • Data collected by the Registry is used for programmatic decision making and resource allocation, monitoring and evaluation activities, cancer cluster investigations, and academic research. 
     
   
   
4. ​ ​Surveillance and Evaluation Unit
   • This Unit collects, analyzes, and monitors data related to cancer screening programs funded by the Center.
   
   
5. ​ ​Maryland Cancer Fund
   • ​​The Fund is a tax checkoff program that is funded solely by public donations. The Fund awards grants to local programs for cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment activities.
   • Cancer treatment grants are provided to program-eligible low-income, uninsured or underinsured Maryland residents via local health departments and eligible organizations.
   
   
6. ​ ​Breast and Cervical Diagnosis and Treatment Program
   • ​This Program reimburses healthcare providers for breast and cervical cancer diagnosis and treatment services provided to its program participants, who are low-income, uninsured or underinsured Maryland residents.
