About the Center for STI Prevention

    Our Mission

The mission of the Center for STI Prevention (CSTIP) is to prevent and reduce sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Maryland. Preventing STIs and their complications is essential for improving both sexual and reproductive health.

    What We Do

CSTIP focuses on three STIs: chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Other reportable infections such as HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis are handled by other Centers in the Infectious Disease Prevention and Health Services Bureau.

CSTIP staff conduct statewide surveillance and epidemiologic investigations of STIs through collaboration and consultation with local health departments. The center’s epidemiologists collect and organize data, analyze data on a timely basis to detect important disease trends, and disseminate these findings to local and state agencies to help inform prevention interventions. CSTIP monitors the reporting practices of laboratories and health care providers to assure prompt reporting of STIs.

    Partner Services

CSTIP provides technical assistance to support local health department delivery of Partner Services. Through Partner Services, sexual or needle-sharing partners of an infected person are notified about their possible exposure to an STI. The infected person and their partners are provided a range of medical, prevention, and counseling services – either directly or through referrals to other agencies. Partner services improve the health of individuals, their families, and their communities.  For more information, check out our page on Partner Services.

CSTIP supports various local health department pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programs throughout Maryland.  These programs provide PrEP services including navigation, medical services, and outreach.

    Technical Assistance and Consultation

CSTIP provides consultation in planning, implementing, and evaluating prevention activities across the state for local health departments and other public and private agencies. CSTIP also provides on-site technical assistance to local health departments.

    Training and Education

Training needs and professional development of local and state health department staff are assessed annually. In addition to the annual statewide STI training conference for local health departments, CSTIP coordinates clinician trainings in collaboration with its training partner, the STD/HIV Prevention Training Center at Johns Hopkins.
