 Meta Data

 What is Metadata?

Metadata is most commonly defined as 'data about data'. While metadata can mean different things in different settings, a metadata record tells you what you need to know about a dataset. It contains information about a dataset in a standardized format.

Metadata describe the who, what, when, where, and why of a dataset. Metadata are important for understanding a dataset and using the data effectively and responsibly. Metadata can also help you determine if a particular dataset will meet your needs.

Maryland Environmental Public Health Tracking metadata displays are modeled after nutrition labels for packaged foods. These Data Facts displays provide valuable information about datasets, similar to the way Nutrition Facts labels provide valuable information about food products.
