There were more than 214,100 brain injury-related hospitalizations and 69,400 deaths in 2020 and 2021, according to the CDC. This represents more than 586 brain injury-related hospitalizations and 190 brain injury-related deaths per day. These estimates do not include the many brain injuries that go untreated.
Traumatic brain injury has been increasingly linked to psychiatric problems as well as substance use and related harms, suggesting that people with brain injury may also present more frequently to mental health and addictions services, according to the
Journal of Head Trauma and Rehabilitation.
