Maryland Department of Health celebrates Public Health WeekBaltimore, MD – Following Governor Wes Moore's proclamation of
April 7-13 as Public Health Week in Maryland, the Maryland Department of Health this week will celebrate the dedication and achievements of the state’s public health workforce in promoting health, safety and preparedness for Marylanders.
Public Health Week in Maryland coincides with the 30th Anniversary of National Public Health Week (2025) and shares its theme: “It Starts Here.” The theme recognizes that public health begins where we live, where we work, and where we play.
“Public health is about working together to improve the lives of families and communities,” said Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman. “From investigating and preventing disease to reducing lead paint and asthma hazards in homes, public health workers make a real difference every day. Public health is woven into all of our lives, and it starts here.”
Public Health Week in Maryland also coincides with the start of National Minority Health Month in April, which this year has the theme: “Be the Source for Better Health.” To mark their commitment to health equity, the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities will host a Minority Health Resources Fair Tuesday, April 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Herbert R. O'Conor State Office Building, at 201 W. Preston Street. This event is FREE and open to the public. It will include free vaccinations and testing for blood pressure, A1C, HIV, RSV, shingles and Hepatitis C.
Throughout the week, the Department will host and participate in events celebrating its more than 6,500 employees, including a community walk and “Lunch and Learn” virtual discussions about key public health issues. The department is also launching a digital media campaign to highlight public health successes in Maryland.
