Proclamation from the Governor of the State of Maryland
MARYLAND MEDICAID MONTH
July 2025

WHEREAS, on July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law Title XIX of the Social Security Act, creating Medicaid, a vital public health insurance program that provides health coverage to millions of low-income children, pregnant women, adults, older adults, and people with disabilities across the United States; and

WHEREAS, for 60 years, Medicaid has played a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of individuals and families, strengthening communities, reducing poverty, and serving as a safety net during public health crises and economic challenges; and

WHEREAS, Medicaid has contributed to better health outcomes, increased access to preventative care, improved management of chronic conditions, and supports essential services such as long-term care and home and community-based services for older adults and people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, in Maryland, Medicaid provides essential health coverage to more than 1.5 million Marylanders, supporting families, children, seniors, and individuals with complex medical needs and disabilities, and strengthening Maryland’s health care system and workforce; and

WHEREAS, the 60th anniversary of Medicaid is an opportunity to celebrate this landmark program’s enduring impact on the lives of Marylanders and people nationwide and to recognize the ongoing commitment of health care professionals, advocates, policymakers, and community partners who work tirelessly to ensure accessible, equitable care for all.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, WES MOORE, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, do hereby proclaim July 2025 as MARYLAND MEDICAID MONTH in Maryland, and do commend this observation to all of our citizens.
