Maryland Department of Health to highlight its commitment as Technology First State with “Let’s Talk Tech” event on August 18, 2025

Baltimore, MD — The Maryland Department of Health today announced its annual event to celebrate the state's designation as a "Technology First State," emphasizing the use of technology for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The virtual event, "Let's Talk Tech," will be held on August 18, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event will highlight various technologies, from basic weighted utensils to advanced 3-D printing and remote support systems. Maryland residents can register to attend the event at bit.ly/MDTechFirst2025.

“The Department envisions a future where all Marylanders find fulfillment and meaning in every aspect of their lives," said Maryland Secretary of Health Dr. Meena Seshamani. “This includes their communities, workplaces and personal lives. Assistive and remote technologies are essential in reaching these goals by supporting greater independence and improving the quality of life for this population.”

Maryland Technology First Day was proclaimed on August 15, 2022. Maryland became the eighth U.S. state to launch the initiative, furthering the state's commitment to empowering all citizens with disabilities through assistive technology.

After the proclamation, the Maryland Department of Health’s Developmental Disabilities Administration has held an annual public event to emphasize the importance of this day and raise awareness about the assistive technology and remote support services available to Marylanders.

"The Technology First event offers a valuable chance to highlight the advantages of using and understanding technology, as well as the numerous innovations available," said Deputy Secretary for the Developmental Disabilities Administration Marlana R. Hutchinson. "Our administration is dedicated to enhancing the lives of Marylanders with disabilities and their families, caregivers, and professional support teams."
