Maryland Department of Health promotes “Medicaid Check-In” campaign to educate Marylanders about redetermination and action required by Marylander participants

Multiplatform campaign will help ensure Marylanders currently on Medicaid are aware and ready to re-enroll for their health benefits during the 12-month renewal period

Baltimore, MD —The Maryland Department of Health and the Department of Human Services held a bi-lingual press conference in English and Spanish to remind Marylanders Medicaid renewal is no longer automatic and provide information on how to prevent any unnecessary loss of insurance coverage. Medicaid enrollees can renew their coverage after receiving notices from Maryland Health Connection or the Department of Human Services.

“The time has come for eligibility renewals for all Medicaid participants, and we want to ensure they know that Medicaid renewals are not automatic this year,” said Maryland Department of Health Secretary of Health Laura Herrera Scott. “We continue our work to reach Medicaid participants across the state, so they can stay up to date as the process unfolds and avoid disruption to their health coverage.”

With the end of the federal public health emergency, the federal government is no longer automatically renewing Medicaid coverage. The “Medicaid Check-in” campaign will prompt Maryland’s nearly 1.8 million Medicaid participants to reapply for benefits during the redetermination period, which began in April and runs through May 2024. The campaign is a joint effort by the department, HealthChoice managed care organizations , Maryland Health Connection , the Maryland Department of Human Services , and the state’s designated health information exchange, Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients. Governor Wes Moore, who is deeply committed to the “Medicaid Check-In” effort, recorded a public service announcement to encourage Marylanders to update their information. That video will be released in the coming days.

The campaign features television, radio, social media, transit ads, and direct communications in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese and Haitian Creole to current Medicaid participants through grassroots efforts with a focus on hard-to-reach populations.

“The department wants to make sure no one receiving Medicaid benefits loses their coverage," said Maryland Department of Human Services Secretary Rafael López. "We proudly support the Medicaid Check-In campaign and will make sure that everyone receives the help they need to complete their eligibility renewal."

In coordination with health care providers, Medicaid participants are encouraged to visit MarylandHealthConnection.gov/CheckIn for more information about renewal. They can also check to verify their contact information is current on the website, or call Maryland Health Connection at 855-642-8572. Help is available in more than 200 languages as are relay services for users who are Deaf and hard of hearing.

Participants who no longer qualify for Medicaid due to positive life changes, such as increased household income, will be assisted by the Maryland Health Connection to identify low-cost health insurance options.  Those who may lose Medicaid coverage may also qualify for a special enrollment period that starts when they have been notified that their Medicaid coverage is ending. Participants are encouraged to enroll in a qualified health plan as soon as possible after Medicaid eligibility ends to avoid a gap in coverage.
