Maryland Department of Health celebrates National Preparedness Month
This year’s theme will focus on encouraging older residents to prepare and plan for disasters and emergencies

Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Department of Health honors National Preparedness Month, held annually in September, to encourage families, businesses and communities to prepare and plan for disasters and emergencies. This year’s campaign focuses on preparing older Marylanders and encourages them to have an emergency plan in place based on their unique health needs, which is especially important for older residents who are living alone, are low-income, have a disability or live in rural areas.

“National Preparedness Month is a great reminder for Marylanders to stay ready, now and throughout the year, for anything that could affect us and our families, especially older family members and neighbors,” said Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman, Deputy Secretary of Public Health Services. “The Office of Preparedness and Response works year-round to help fulfill our mission of a prepared Maryland by coordinating the state’s public health and medical response during any events that can adversely affect the health of Marylanders.”

During the month of September, the Maryland Department of Health will share preparedness information, resources and tips to help older adults prepare for disasters and emergencies. The campaign will take place across the Department’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts including the Office of Preparedness and Response’s Twitter and Facebook.
