Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Proclaimed in Maryland

Proclamation from the Governor of the State of Maryland
COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
March 2025

Whereas, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Maryland; and

Whereas, individuals ages 45 to 75 years should be routinely screened for colorectal cancer, and individuals at increased or high risk may need to start screening before the age of 45 years; and

Whereas, individuals ages 76 to 85 years may be screened if the provider recommends screening after considering the individual’s overall health, past colorectal cancer screening history, and preferences; and

Whereas, colorectal cancer does not always cause symptoms, especially in its early stages, so individuals can look healthy, feel fine, and not know there may be a problem; and

Whereas, screening can help in the early detection of colorectal cancer; and

Whereas, the Maryland Department of Health encourages Marylanders to learn about their risk for colorectal cancer and ways to reduce the risk, to talk to their healthcare provider about recommended colorectal cancer screenings, and to get screened for colorectal cancer as appropriate.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, WES MOORE, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, do hereby proclaim MARCH 2025 as COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH in Maryland, and call upon the people of our state to join in this observance.
