ASTHMA AWARENESS MONTH
MAY 2023
WHEREAS, Asthma is a chronic disease that temporarily restricts breathing by constriction of bronchial muscles that wrap around airways, swelling of the airways and the production of mucus that clogs the airways; and
WHEREAS, While our knowledge about asthma has increased substantially during the past decade, much remains to be learned about its causes and the most effective treatment and management techniques. Nonetheless, with proper diagnosis, good treatment, and effective self-management, people with asthma can control their condition and lead the full and active lives they choose; and
WHEREAS, As an estimated 15 million Americans suffer from asthma, including 4.8 million children under the age of 18. Asthma is the number one reason children are absent from school; and
WHEREAS, Maryland is proud to join in helping to increase public awareness of the important facts regarding Asthma and allergic diseases.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, WES MOORE, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, do hereby proclaim May 2023, as ASTHMA AWARENESS MONTH IN MARYLAND and do commend this observance to all our citizens.
