Pandemic influenza: An influenza virus which humans have little or no immunity to. An influenza pandemic would easily spread from person to person, quickly becoming a global disease outbreak with the potential to affect millions of people.
A pandemic would be widespread, with outbreaks occurring throughout Maryland, the United States, and the world. Consequences of a severe pandemic would include high rates of worker absenteeism, a crowded health care system, disease, and even death.
The Maryland Department of Health Office of Preparedness and Response has established plans for a pandemic event. These plans and activities include:
- A current Pandemic Influenza Plan.
- Annual pandemic influenza exercises for emergency personnel.
- Partnering with local, state, federal, and private agencies to form a comprehensive approach to minimizing the effect of a flu pandemic.
- Access to a stockpile of antiviral medications and medical supplies.
